Scoil Chaitríona Senior was gifted 100 sapling native Irish trees which were planted by our pupils at a site next to Lough Atalia on the 16th December 2021. Students from Ms O’Grady’s 3rd Class and Ms Griffin’s Language Class represented our school at this tree planting event.

The Galway National Park City initiative https://galwaynationalparkcity.com/ organised this event, in partnership with the Self-help Africa https://selfhelpafrica.org/onemilliontrees/ project, which aims to plant over a million trees in Africa, with the support of many Irish schools.

The Lough Atalia site is being re-wilded by Galway Community College, transforming it from pasture to wetlands, meadows and woods. This area will become a very important habitat within our city boundaries for local flora and fauna.

This site will become an Outdoor Classroom and Outdoor Lab which will facilitate lots of schools, and other groups access to this important habitat .
